Anusara® Yoga

Anusara Yoga

John Friend's Anusara® Yoga and its origins

Anusara® is a modern yoga method founded by John Friend in 1997. John Friend began studying yoga - both philosophy and practice - at age 13.  He has since studied around the world with many top instructors.  Prior to developing the Anusara® method, Friend focused on Iyengar yoga and Siddha yoga, studied in Indian ashrams, and became well-versed in many schools of Indian philosophical darshanas, Buddhism, Taoism, Sufism, meditation, and devotional chanting.  Friend is also a licensed massage therapist.

One of the fastest-growing yoga disciplines, there are over 250 certified Anusara® teachers, 750 licensed Anusara®-inspired teachers, and hundreds of thousands of students, with a presence on every continent.

Anusara® Yoga and the three A's

Built upon the spiritual and holistic benefits of hatha yoga, Anusara® follows the Universal Principles of Alignment, central to which are the three As:

  • Attitude (the power of the heart behind every movement)
  • Alignment (mindful cognizance of how each part of our self - body and mind - is interconnected)
  • Action (the body's natural energy provides stability and "joyful freedom").

Classes begin and end with an invocation, centering, and /or meditation.

Anusara® Yoga and "flowing with grace" at Mind 2 Body in Sherman Oaks

Anusara® yoga is comprised of over 250 poses, many derived from traditional hatha practices, and all coordinated with the breath.  Variations are encouraged as an expression of creativity and a way to fit each student's experience and ability level.   As such, Anusara® does not follow a set routine; rather, a "principle of sequence" is followed, with the ultimate goal of allowing each student to progress at his or her own pace and experience the "expansion of inner freedom and consciousness."  The Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness is central to Anusara®.  Instructors do not "fix" students' postures; they enhance them to better reveal their "innate goodness, worthiness, and supreme nature."

Studying Anusara® Yoga in Sherman Oaks at Mind 2 Body Studio will help you "flow with grace" throughout every aspect of your daily life.
